About NERVA Tryout Rules
All Massachusetts clubs affiliated with USA Volleyball compete under the New England Region Volleyball Association (NERVA). NERVA sets a standardized tryout policy — most clubs begin tryouts on or around the same July weekend (this year, July 11–12). Clubs are prohibited from holding power/national team tryouts before this date. Regional team tryouts may also be held in the fall. This is why you'll notice most clubs in this list have the same key dates.

National/Power vs Regional: Which Team Level is Right?
Most clubs in Massachusetts offer at least two competitive tracks. Understanding the difference before tryouts is important — not just so you know which tryout to attend, but so you can set the right expectations for your athlete's season.
National / Power Teams

Experienced players planning to continue through high school or college, or those who want maximum development intensity

Regional Teams
For newer players or those with limited availability
Best for
Newer players still learning the game, or players who cannot commit to a lot of practice time
Practice commitment
1–2 practices per week
Tournament travel
~1 weekend/month within a one-hour drive of home
Typical season cost
$1,500–$2,500 per season
Which tier should my athlete try out for?
If your athlete has 0–1 years of volleyball experience or can't commit to 3+ practices a week, regional is almost certainly the better fit for now. Starting at the right level builds confidence and keeps the sport enjoyable — which is what keeps athletes in the game long enough to develop real skill.
If your athlete is experienced, motivated, and wants to be challenged — and your family can handle the time and financial commitment — then trying out for a power/national team makes sense. Many athletes try out for power teams and are offered a regional spot if they're not quite there yet; that's a normal and healthy outcome.
